Mohamed Salah World Cup 2026: Latest News
Mohamed Salah has been confirmed as Egypt’s captain for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, combining with Manchester City’s Omar Marmoush to lead the Pharaohs’ attack in Group G alongside Belgium, New Zealand and Iran.
Salah enters the tournament just two goals short of Egypt’s all-time international scoring record of 69 goals, currently held by head coach Hossam Hassan himself. Scoring twice at this World Cup would make him the greatest goalscorer in Egyptian history.
Egypt played Brazil in a pre-tournament friendly on June 6 in Cleveland before opening their World Cup campaign against Belgium on June 15 in Seattle. They then face New Zealand in Vancouver on June 21 before completing Group G against Iran on June 26.
One notable surprise in Egypt’s squad was the inclusion of 18-year-old striker Hamza Abdelkarim, currently on loan at Barcelona’s reserve team. This is widely expected to be Salah’s final World Cup. After missing the 2022 tournament entirely, he arrives in 2026 fully fit and determined to lead Egypt beyond the group stage for the first time in their history.
